Erase & Rewind The Refectory 10th – 21st July
Henry Tietzsch-Tyler, Dale Holmes, Derek Sprawson, Finbar Prior
Opening View : Saturday 9th July 6-8pm
Closing View : Thursday 21st July 6-8pm
Erase & Rewind will be a two week event that takes a dynamic approach to the exhibition space, using The Refectory as an interactive environment; reconfiguring, altering and evolving throughout the duration of the show. As works shift, relationships change and new dialogues will emerge. The Refectory becomes an open venue to aid the exchange of ideas as the rigid formula of exhibiting is broken down, taking the opening and closing evenings as points for discussion, and welcoming the viewers into the space at times of creation and flux. Each of the four exhibiting artists embrace change and renewal in different ways:
Henry Tietzsch-Tyler’s anglo-german heritage is a backdrop to his paintings, the process of ‘erasing’ the very painting as it is being made is almost a compulsive act, painting out the inherited memory of his mother’s wartime trauma. Tietzsch-Tyler’s assemblage of paintings is a storage solution that must have taken years to evolve to its present form. This work will be exhibited for the first time and will unfold to reveal its buried secrets over the course of the exhibition.
Dale Holmes makes work according to his current concerns, consciously striving away from the creation of a signature style. The work in this exhibition was previously shown in Bloc gallery in Sheffield, but have since been re-painted, to disallow a re-visiting of the same ideas. Holmes now has surrendered the control of how these paintings are arranged and rearranged for this exhibition, painting-constructions that are built up and dismantled and rebuilt and dismantled..
Derek Sprawson will be returning to The Refectory, part of the Eagle Works studios that he originally founded with his latest work. The work will be made from component parts which will continue finding their places as the exhibition develops, revealing new subtleties within the architecture of the space.
Finbar Prior’s works take on personas which through the duration of the show will become part of their own soap opera, drawing you to return for each new instalment of scandal and drama.
Open 12- 5 Tuesday to Saturday 10th- 21st July
