It is the first time in nearly 40 years that Hockney's early works – including the iconic painting A Bigger Splash – have been brought together.
The exhibition revisits Hockey's work from 1960 - 1968, and features over 60 works from national and international collections.
"Hockney, in this period, was at the crest of a wave, not only in the artistic avant garde, but in culture in general. It is a fascinating trajectory, from his first idiosyncratic takes on abstraction in 1960 to his unforgettable representations of southern California several years on. Allusions to this work abound in art today – in the work of Elizabeth Peyton, Jack Pierson and Frances Stark, to cite just three important examples. It feels absolutely the right time to be revisiting this work now,” said curator of the exhibition and Director of Nottingham Contemporary, Alex Farquharson.
Director of Tate, Sir Nicholas Serota said: “David Hockney's early work was a breath of fresh air in England in the early Sixties and is a brilliant choice for an opening show at Nottingham Contemporary, a gallery which is dedicated to showing new art and established art in a new light.”
Alongside the Hockney exhibition we are presenting an exhibition of new and recent work by Frances Stark, one of the most fascinating artists to have emerged from Los Angeles in the past 15 years. It is her first exhibition at a public gallery in the UK.
