Gods and Rockers - Ben Judd at Nottingham Contemporary

November 26, 2010 from 11am to 4pm
Gods and Rockers is a look at how two entities can create themselves. For believers, both speak truth and exemplify a way of life, for the detractors they are based on what may appear to be delicate reasoning. Bringing together artists who work with myth, ritual, idolatry and belief, these three events aim to begin a conversation about the creation of enigmatic figures seen as ‘Gods’ by their followers, and to discuss, perhaps..., the nature of authenticity when considering systems or movements…See More

VOICE/UNDER at Broadway Media Centre

May 7, 2010 from 7pm to 9:30pm
VOICE/UNDER is an investigation into the way artists use the tension between sound and image as a tool. The featured work uses the inherent contract and fusion between the two registers within its structure, sometimes to create disparity and at other times to collude in order to raise questions of perception, language and understanding. The resultant questions might lead us into obscurity, or intrigue us as to the narrative possibilities decided by the viewer’s individual interpretation of what…See More

What is your current practice?
The quest is essential, the doorway is key and the experience is waiting. The artist as a pilgrim, as an explorer. The romantic hero cast against his chosen landscape begins to perform a task of a search inside themselves for a deeper meaning. A formless God, unachievable dreams and unrequited love, the pilgrim chases his desire although it always remains one step away.

It is the use of disparity and representation which develops a gap, somewhere between the work and the viewer or betwixt elements within the work which creates space and disorientation – an opportunity for experience. The crossing of the threshold into liminality, the gap between the representation and what it represents, the opportunistic doorway all combine to create the circumstances of the sublime; it is the viewers willingness to explore the space that completes the work.
